We all know Democrats are proud of being neither moral nor patriotic. It makes them tolerant and worldly, at least in their minds.
We expect more of Republicans–even the liberal media does–and we hold them to a higher standard accordingly. Republicans are always waving the flag and claiming to be champions of family values. So when they fall, they are attacked and generally rightly so.
No one is perfect but we still expect a certain amount of decency. Whatever flaws Mitt Romney had, I do think he loves America, has personal integrity, and believes in American exceptionalism. Without him the Republican party has to depend on its senators and representatives as leaders. Generally, they are disappointing. Sen. Lindsey Graham and Speaker John Boehner collaborate with liberals and do nothing, respectively.
So then we look for other elected officials who can inspire with their words but we are disappointed by their actions. Sen. Marco Rubio, for example, has tarnished his reputation by working with the likes of Sen. Chuck Schumer to ruin America’s already tattered immigration system. Amnesty now and border security later should be a non-starter for any conservative. Not to the naïve Rubio.
Gov. Sarah Palin, once our great hope, has all but disappeared. Perhaps her return to Fox News will lead to her speaking out more prominently.
Speaking of Fox News, I was shocked at the attitude of many of their reporters and commentators about the NSA scandal. Overall, they acted like it was no big deal. They place security above privacy, willing to exchange it for their freedom.
For a network obsessed (and rightly so!) with the Benghazi debacle, I was shocked they were so casual about this invasion of our privacy.
For the first time in my life I support the ACLU in suing the government about this violation of the Fourth Amendment. How sad it is that one of the most anti-American organizations there is cares more about privacy–usually used as a justification by liberals for promoting abortion–than supposed conservatives. Frightening.
Who then is left to lead us? We have talk show hosts who tell the truth, such as Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage. But otherwise we have no one. And at the end of the day, talk show hosts are entertainers and not leaders. They can be inspiring but cannot be our Ronald Reagan.
I know there won’t be another Reagan in my lifetime, but we need good, moral leaders who put America first. How hard is it to run for office as someone who loves America and to stay true to those ideals for as long as one has political power and influence?
It is depressing but we get the leaders we deserve. The fact that we have empty leadership is more a comment on what the American people have become than even on our vacuous officials. So we need to look in the mirror before we decry the situation we have allowed to develop. And make changes in our lives–and then at the polls.
